Friends of Martin Mooney

Thank you for your interest in our 27th Annual Marathon on Saturday, March 15, 2025. This event marks twenty-seven years we have rolled a person with ALS 26.2 miles as a group effort. Twenty-two of those years were with the Los Angeles Marathon and ALSUOC is grateful to have been a part of such an amazing event.
This year marks the fourth year of holding it locally, along the Orange County coast. The views are amazing, the energy is high, and the parking is much better! Due to the circumstances of 2021, ALS United Orange County was not able to participate in the Los Angeles Marathon but just like ALS cannot take a day off for the pandemic, we knew the show must go on. So, we reimagined the event – and the response was amazing. ALS United Orange County reorganized it as a run from Newport Beach to Bolsa Chica and back. This is a private invitation only marathon.
Taking part in this event will make you part of our elite team of 26 individual mile sponsors, runners and beach cruisers, who will appeal to their friends, family, and business associates to raise ALS awareness and financial support for local Care Services, ALS Patient Advocacy and Research. Your participation on behalf of ALS United Orange County would be truly appreciated and an experience you will never forget.
This tradition started in 1999 by Martin Mooney, after he was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 37. Even though his condition had seriously deteriorated, he went through the course again in 2000. He passed away from complications of the disease a few weeks after his second Marathon. Each year since, his spirit and courage have been remembered and honored by other ALS patients who have been our “Marathoners”.
